Chapter 10 - Digging up the past
It was Friday morning, Cesca had been getting up early, which slightly scared Jonah he was so used to her moods in the morning, but loved how much more energetic she was since having Mia, so he knew it was for the better. Cesca was downstairs feeding Mia whilst watching daybreak, it seemed to chill her out in the mornings and today was defiantly a day to feel stressed, Cescas family were coming over for the weekend she hadn’t seen them in ages and hadn’t spoken to her dad in years, in fact she couldn’t understand why he was even coming, he made it very clear last time they met, that he didn’t want anything to do with her. She chose to think about the positives of the trip, she really didn’t want it ruined by the feud that was present between her and her dad. Mia didn’t need to see what a nasty man he was; if he really had to be there he was going to be there for Mia. It was almost quarter past eight so Jonah took off, he had school but was managing to cope with a family and still be getting A’s and A*’s in his exams and coursework, Cesca was so proud of him. “Love you Ces, I’ll see you later, ready to meet the in-laws”, Cesca couldn’t help but laugh, his cheeky voice just put a smile on her face. Cesca got on with her day, which now consisted mainly of keeping Mia occupied, she was nearly a month old, and it had all gone by so quickly. Cesca needed to get on with the house work her family would be at the house in less than 7 hours, Flopsy took Cescas place that bunny was a life saver these days and she got on with the hovering.
Meanwhile Jonah was in 3rd period, the days seemed to go a lot faster now that he had something to look forward to once he got home. Jonah was really getting into his role as a husband and father, he often spoilt his wife and daughter with presents, Cesca always insisted he shouldn’t have but he wanted to, Cesca was doing so well coping on her own with Mia, he wanted to show he appreciated it, he did however know inside that Cesca would have simply been happy with a kiss and a cuddle. Jonah was finding that he was really starting to embrace school, he missed Cesca and Mia so much but having them made him think about the future even more, he wanted to look after them and getting good grades was the way forward. Jonah was also spending much more time with his friends now that he didn’t have to blow them off for Cesca who was once his dirty secret. His friends had also changed, maturing over the coming weeks; maybe it was the presence of a mature friend like Jonah, who knew. Back at home Cesca was starting to panic, she had told her mum about Jonah, she was sure that her dad would be much less understanding, in fact she knew he wouldn’t accept them at all, he was the entire reason that Cesca came to England in the first place, she wanted a life, she couldn’t take being belittled by her own father, she had his secret hanging over his shoulders, if anyone were to find out Cesca would be history. She couldn’t take it, the stress was becoming too much, she stopped the house work and began to occupy Mia, she was sure that her beautiful daughter would cheer her up and she did, for the first five minutes, but all she could think about was what her dad was capable of , what was he going to do? Cesca decided a change of scene would be the best thing for now and with that she picked up Mia who was dressed in a gorgeous pink dress decorated with butterflies and placed her in her bright pink and orange buggy. “Right, were going to surprise daddy”, Cesca hadn’t properly been out the house in almost a month, she needed this plus the thought of seeing Jonah was defiantly distracting her mind. Off they went down the road, the walk was pleasant, and Mia seemed to enjoy it especially in the company of mummy and Flopsy. They reached the school gates, it was lunch time, but only the start so it wasn’t as busy as it could have been, she walked through the doors of waterloo road and immediately bumped into Karen and Chris who were almost instantly besotted with baby Mia. “she is gorgeous”, Said Chris, a surprising comment for the likes of him, “she is so pretty Cesca, you should be very proud” , “oh I am Karen, she is my little ray of sunshine”, Cesca couldn’t help but smile and check on little Mia who was quite happily sucking on poor old Flopsy’s ear. “Karen I just came into see Jonah, have you seen him?” , “urr yes, Chris said he was in the science corridor last time I saw him and make sure you pay a visit to the staff room before you leave I’m sure they’ll be excited to see you”, “I will do, oh and while I remember once I have finished what I need to do, could I have a word in your office?”, “my door is always open”, Cesca smiled and began to walk towards pushing Mia who was now becoming grizzly, all she needed as the students began to stare, the majority were very supportive and found Mia adorable, but there were also a few that couldn’t help but cause trouble.
Jonah saw her coming, she was shocked but pleasantly surprised to see them both, “hello gorgeous” he said as he bent down to pick up Mia, Cesca was thankful, she handed him over the bottle and they both walked towards her classroom which wasn’t being used since she wasn’t there. They walked in she parked the buggy in the corner and picked up some folders of course work and textbooks and shoved them under the buggy before sitting down. “So what brings you here Ces”, “needed to get out, Mia thought we should surprise you”, Cesca smiled this was definitely a good idea, “did she now”, Jonah looked at Mia with his big brown eyes. “Oh and I needed to sort out when I’m coming back to work with Karen”, “so your thinking of coming back”, “well, yes, Mia is content and we have her in her routine. I need to come back Jonah, we need the money, I don’t think we can survive on this maternity pay for much longer”, “your right Ces, I’ll back you the whole way, but only if your sure and feel ready”, “Jonah I’m more than ready, thanks for everything, you’re always there for me”, Jonah went over to Cesca kissing her on her head, he passed Mia back over, “think that should sort old grizzly guts”,”i hope so, she hasn’t had a nap today ,so I think she must be tired”, Cesca put Mia back in to her stroller and tucked Flopsy in to. “Right well I better go sort this out with Karen, I love you Jonah, and by the time I’m done here I’m guessing you’ll be done?” “Yeah it was a nice surprise to see you both, love you to Ces and yeah I should be done meet you outside Karen’s office, I have the car “, Cesca nodded giving him one final kiss before heading off to Karen’s office. Jonah left the room with a smile on his face, seeing them both here had made his day.

She knocked on the door “come in”; Cesca pushed the door and quickly pushed the buggy in before the door swung back. “Ah Cesca, you wanted to see me didn’t you?”, “Yes, I was wanting to talk to you about coming back to work”, Cesca was beaming, she turned to check on little Mia, who looked so peaceful as she slept, Karen couldn’t help but smile to, she was a gorgeous baby and Cesca was such a lovely woman, despite their differences in the past. “Well Cesca were happy to have you when ever your ready”, Cesca smiled somehow she didn’t expect that to be Karen’s answer, she didn’t expect her to say no but she didn’t expect her to say that either, all Cesca knew was that wasn’t what she thought she was going to say, “I’m guessing you would want a place for Mia in the crèche?”, “that would be great, Karen”, Cesca couldn’t believe how easy that was, “so when are you thinking of rejoining us?”, “I was thinking of the beginning of next term, that way it’s not complicated”, “sounds great Cesca , we shall see you both then” Karen gave out a smile, she was happy with the result, Cesca left the room also beaming, she couldn’t wait to get back into the swing of things. As she left Karen’s office she immediately saw Jonah, he gave her a hug and a kiss and then helpfully took the buggy, “oh, before we leave I promised Chris I’d pop into the staffroom say hi to everyone”, “okay, so what did Karen say?”, They began to walk towards the staffroom Jonah reach out his arm wrapping it around Cescas waist whilst pushing a sleeping Mia. “She said that I could start back whenever I wanted and I have chosen to start back the beginning of the new term”, “Ces, that’s great news “, Jonah was beaming, they walked down the corridor as a family, and everyone who passed couldn’t help but smile. They reached the staffroom; Cesca gave a pleasant knock and walked on in followed by Jonah and Mia. “Oh what a pleasant surprise”, Ruby said almost fakly, Cesca chose to ignore it. She sat down leaving room for Jonah and the buggy, she held his hand. “The majority of the teachers were all so happy to see Cesca, it was a lovely surprise and they too were absolutely besotted with little Mia and were very accepting of Jonah. They stayed for coffee before it was time for them to leave, “I’ll see you all next term then”, Cesca happily left, knowing her decision was the right one. The left, Mia now in Cescas arms after waking up in the staff room, she was slowly nodding back off to sleep, and Jonah was still pushing the buggy as they walked towards his car. They got home quickly, Mia was content in her car seat, Cesca was smiling and Jonah was excited after all he was about to meet her family. They parked the car outside the house, Mia was carried in by Cesca and placed in her baby bouncer, they had little time to themselves before the doorbell rang, Cesca took a deep breath, Jonah could see her starting to panic, ”Ces, you alright” Cesca waited before she answered “it doesn’t matter Jonah”, “Ces, I’m not opening this door until you tell me what’s going on”, Jonah was genuinely worried about his wife he had never seen her mood deteriorate so quickly. “Okay, to be truthful I’m dreading this and have been all day, it’s the reason I came to see you, I needed to forget about it all for just one second”, “Ces, I thought you wanted this?” Jonah was confused; he didn’t understand what Cesca was going through, if only she would tell him. “Jonah, I do want this, I know this sounds mad, it’s complicated but basically, me and my dad don’t exactly see eye to eye”, she bowed her head and began to fiddle with her fingers, Jonah was seriously worried, he had never seen Cesca like this and he had seen her being arrested. Jonah was wary he gave Cesca a reassuring hug and opened the door, her mum was the first person standing at the door, and this was enough to increase the smile that Jonah had just put on her face. She gave her mum a hug and said hello to all her sisters, ignoring her dad, which wasn’t uncommon to the Montoya’s though Jonah didn’t like his reaction “Francesca aren’t you even going to appreciate me coming all this way to see you, how ungrateful”, Jonah had to but in how dare someone talk to her like that, Cesca continued to ignore her dad until he firmly put his hand on her shoulder, it startled her “sorry dad, I’m just a little tired”, Cesca was obviously scared, Jonah held her hand tightly as if to say I’m here. Cesca sniffed trying to sort herself out after all she was happy to see her mum,Isabel,Eva and Anna, she loved them and had missed them so much, she lead them in to the lounge and went over to pick up Mia, who was happy to see her mummy, “this is Mia” Cesca said with the biggest smile on her face until she saw her father’s reaction, then it slowly turned in to a frown, she passed little Mia over to her mum who was more than happy to hold her first grandchild, Cesca was the second youngest of all her sisters and was closest to Anna her youngest sister who was only 2 years older than Jonah. She sat next to her catching up on everything that had gone on, Jonah had his beady eyes on Cescas dad, he could see all he wanted to do was cause trouble, and he knew something wasn’t right, something had happened to make Cesca so scared, why wouldn’t she tell him? “Aw Cesca she is gorgeous, a spitting image of you my love” , Cesca smiled and leant over to give her mum a hug, “thanks mum, she is perfect, Jonah is so good with her, he spoils her and me rotten”, “I bet he does” her father added. He was slowly bubbling up, he clearly didn’t want to be there so why did come? Jonah couldn’t put the pieces together. Cescas father saw an opportunity and took it just as her mum was about to give Mia back to Cesca her dad decided he wanted to play the loving grandfather and snatched her out of her hands, Cesca let out a little snivel, her sisters all presumed she was just finding it all a bit much seeing them all. “Careful” Jonah scolded, “that’s my little girl, your yanking about their”, “and she’s my granddaughter”, Jonah was fuming; Cesca was slowly becoming more and more upset. Jonah went and rescued poor little Mia who was bawling her little eyes out after being yanked about by such an evil man, Jonah gave her a quick cuddle and gave her back to Cesca who held her tightly in her arms, Cescas sisters English wasn’t that great so they missed a lot of the snide comments and took no notice of the ever brewing storm. “I’ve tried to give you a chance, but what is your problem, I’ve watched you belittle my wife, how dare you talk to her like that, your an evil and very spiteful man”, Cescas father instantly pushed Jonah out the way, startling his wife and 3 other daughters, they had never seen him this angry however, Cesca unfortunately had.
“You told him Francesca, was what I did to you not enough for you to keep your bloody mouth shut”, Cesca was holding Mia so tightly she didn’t know what do to, Jonah instantly ran in front of her, Jonah had no clue as to what he might do and he wasn’t going to chance it. “Tell me what exactly”, “Tell me”, Cesca slowly realised this was her chance to get her biggest secret off her chest, “You’ve always been one for secrets in your life Francesca and the biggest one of all was the fact you fell in love with one of your pupils”, Jonah was just about to give him what for when Cesca plucked up the courage to finally answer back “Jonah was never a mistake, I love him and were happy, the mistake was me never telling him what you did to me, what you put me through for half my childhood”, Cesca breathed she handed Mia over to Jonah, she thought that was the best thing to do with a mad man angry at her shouting the odds round the house, “You were the one who caused the mistake dad, I was 14 years old when it happened, I had just got back from my friends, no one was home, I looked around, I heard voices, your voice in fact,”Ces”, Jonah said he wasn’t sure whether she really wanted to say what she was about to say, “Jonah, I need to say this”, she held his hand squeezing with all her emotions. “all I did was simply walk into the garden, I saw you with her”, she struggled to say the last part of her sentence, “you hit me, you hit me and threatened me to keep this quiet, you told me if mum ever found out, it would kill”, Cesca began to cry, Jonah held her with his spare arm so tightly, “how could you do this to her, your own daughter, I knew something wasn’t right the moment you stepped into my home, our home” Cesca was holding Jonah as tight as she could until she realised her mum was in tears, “mum, I never meant to hurt you”, “see Francesca this is what you have caused”, “haven’t YOU caused enough, LEAVE”, Jonah shouted, trying his hardest to calm Mia down who was absolutely petrified. “Just shut up”, her mother cried, she reached out holding her daughter cradling her “how did I let him do this to you Ces, how did I miss this”, “mum it was never your fault, you did your best with all of us,te quiero Madre”, with that Cescas father left, no one was going to let that man get to them no more, Cesca slowly walked backup to Jonah simply whispering the words, “I love you, thank you Jonah, I’m sorry. No more secrets no more lies”, Jonah simply kissed her holding her close. He felt so sorry for Cesca her life really hadn’t been a smooth ride. They all sorted themselves out and sat down for a meal that Jonah had yet again cooked. Now that the awkwardness and anger had gone, they were all able to bond, the eventful evening had come to a closure and so had Cescas biggest secret.

“You told him Francesca, was what I did to you not enough for you to keep your bloody mouth shut”, Cesca was holding Mia so tightly she didn’t know what do to, Jonah instantly ran in front of her, Jonah had no clue as to what he might do and he wasn’t going to chance it. “Tell me what exactly”, “Tell me”, Cesca slowly realised this was her chance to get her biggest secret off her chest, “You’ve always been one for secrets in your life Francesca and the biggest one of all was the fact you fell in love with one of your pupils”, Jonah was just about to give him what for when Cesca plucked up the courage to finally answer back “Jonah was never a mistake, I love him and were happy, the mistake was me never telling him what you did to me, what you put me through for half my childhood”, Cesca breathed she handed Mia over to Jonah, she thought that was the best thing to do with a mad man angry at her shouting the odds round the house, “You were the one who caused the mistake dad, I was 14 years old when it happened, I had just got back from my friends, no one was home, I looked around, I heard voices, your voice in fact,”Ces”, Jonah said he wasn’t sure whether she really wanted to say what she was about to say, “Jonah, I need to say this”, she held his hand squeezing with all her emotions. “all I did was simply walk into the garden, I saw you with her”, she struggled to say the last part of her sentence, “you hit me, you hit me and threatened me to keep this quiet, you told me if mum ever found out, it would kill”, Cesca began to cry, Jonah held her with his spare arm so tightly, “how could you do this to her, your own daughter, I knew something wasn’t right the moment you stepped into my home, our home” Cesca was holding Jonah as tight as she could until she realised her mum was in tears, “mum, I never meant to hurt you”, “see Francesca this is what you have caused”, “haven’t YOU caused enough, LEAVE”, Jonah shouted, trying his hardest to calm Mia down who was absolutely petrified. “Just shut up”, her mother cried, she reached out holding her daughter cradling her “how did I let him do this to you Ces, how did I miss this”, “mum it was never your fault, you did your best with all of us,te quiero Madre”, with that Cescas father left, no one was going to let that man get to them no more, Cesca slowly walked backup to Jonah simply whispering the words, “I love you, thank you Jonah, I’m sorry. No more secrets no more lies”, Jonah simply kissed her holding her close. He felt so sorry for Cesca her life really hadn’t been a smooth ride. They all sorted themselves out and sat down for a meal that Jonah had yet again cooked. Now that the awkwardness and anger had gone, they were all able to bond, the eventful evening had come to a closure and so had Cescas biggest secret.
