Chapter 45 - Awkward Silences

The end of the day had arrived; Cesca sat almost lifeless at her desk, her pen the only thing moving as it ran through her fingers, being jolted as it hit the desk every now and then. Her head rested on her delicate face as her eyes stared into space, her mind focused on everything but school, everything but what it was supposed to be on. Cesca couldn’t stop thinking about little Daisy, Cesca was caring and kind, she couldn’t help but worry about her, it was almost instinct. There was a tiny tap at the door, “Ces, do you want to stay locked in school”, A friendly voice called out, it was Tom. The words slightly startled her, she shook them off as she refocused her mind, “Sorry Tom, I don’t know where my head is today, I’ll see you tomorrow”. Cesca began to gather her things together as she remembered that she was to pick up Mia from nursery as Jonah had a faculty meeting; she looked down at her watch, quarter past 3 it read, Nursery finished in 5 minutes, Cesca was sure to be late, even in the car. She grabbed her things and began to walk at a pace, her arm submerged in the contents of her bag, her fingers fiddling around for her keys, but of course she couldn’t find them, why did things like this always happen when you were in a hurry, it was just so typical. She reached her car and had practically dunked her head into her bag this time, but she couldn’t see anything. She juggled her bag around to hear the jingling of her keys, so why couldn’t she find them. Cesca let out a sigh, why was life so hard. Adanna had caught sight of her frustration and walked over to see if she could help her friend. “Ces, you alright”, “Yeah, just can’t find my keys and I am late for picking Mia up”, as Cesca finished her sentence a tiny little foot decided now would be as best time as ever to kick out and jab her. She let out a little groan, “Ces?” Adanna questioned, she was worried. She wasn’t good at all this baby stuff, she didn’t know the process very well so was relieved when Cesca replied with, “I’m fine, just a kick”, she smiled as she finished her sentence; it was a much better look than a screwed up face in pain. It didn’t take Adanna long to appear with the keys, “thanks, you’re a life saver. I shall see you tomorrow, I am so late”, Cesca hopped in her car as fast as she could, which wasn’t very fast after making herself as comfortable as she could with a beach ball on her lap. She turned on the ignition and was full steam ahead; heading for Mia at nursery, Cesca could already feel Mia’s anger and frustration.

Cesca’s fingers tapped on the steering wheel, her teeth biting her lip as Cesca managed to get stuck behind car after car after bus. Cesca had clearly hit school rush hour, which just made being late even worse, Mia was going to be in a state when Cesca finally got to her, a state she wasn’t really in the right frame of mind to be dealing with, but you take what’s in front of you and you work with it. Cesca finally reached the nursery, she pulled in to the pavement, parking particularly badly, but she was forgiven she was in a rush. Cesca slammed her door shut as she made her way over to the nursery. Her feet were sore and her back ached, she was feeling pretty rubbish and on top of it all rushed. She opened the door, catching her breath and bracing herself as she did so. Mia was standing with one of the lovely ladies, Flopsy’s legs dragged on the floor, her thumb in her mouth and her face sodden. “I’m sorry baby, mummy got caught up at work”, Mia flung her arms around her little girl, holding her close as she tried to cheer her up, reassure her that it was okay, she was just late. “I wasn’t going to leave you, I love you Mia”, the lady smiled as Cesca, “Don’t worry about it, it happens all the time, she was a little shaken up but Daisy’s mum hasn’t turned up either, so they were pretty good company for one another”, “Thank you”, Cesca’s mind suddenly headed over to Daisy, Cesca felt that she was extremely late so god knows where Daisy’s mum was. She noticed that Daisy was a little jittery, resembling a shaking cat, scared of the massive dog that was psyching them out. “Come here sweet heart, why don’t you wait with us till your mum comes”, “You sure that’s okay”, the lady asked, “Its fine, I know Daisy well”, Cesca smiled at little Daisy who was happy to be with her best friend and her mum. “Thank you”, Daisy said, still slightly shaken, “It’s okay, so where do you think your mum is?”, There was a long pause and then “Work, she is at work”, Daisy was beginning to get a little sad, Mia was there for her friend, she gave her a big Mia hug, Cesca smiled. Holding Flopsy as she did so. Suddenly a rather irritated women approached, Daisy gasped. “Hurry up”, the woman called out, Daisy scrambled to her feet, Cesca’s face was filled with confusion “Daisy is this mum?” Cesca could feel Mia’s arms wrapped around her legs, she whispered down to her “Baby, it’s okay. I’m here”, she smiled. Daisy practically burst out crying, Cesca loosened Mia’s grip to run over to Daisy, she already had her own ideas that something wasn’t right and now it was clear, Daisy was scared of her mum, Cesca gave her a reassuring hug. “Daisy, it’s okay. You don’t have to be scared”. Daisy sobbed turning towards Cesca, a shoulder to cry on, someone who cared about her. “What you doing”, the woman called out, her manner reminded her off Kyle Stacks mum, the day the dog was set on her, “I am just helping your daughter, something you’re clearly not doing”. Cesca almost regretted every word she spoke, Mia hid behind Cesca, “Mia, don’t worry baby”. Cesca could feel the back of her legs get wetter, with every tear Mia cried, “Do you know what have her. She is nothing to me! Just a waist of space”, these words hurt Cesca, how could anyone say that about their own flesh and blood. “How can you say that about your daughter, your little girl”, the woman walked off before Cesca could run after her, Daisy broke down in tears so did Mia. Cesca bent over, not quite managing to squat. “Listen you two, its okay. Please don’t worry. We are all going home and Daisy is going to be staying for dinner, how’s beans on toast with cheese sound?”, the girls all enjoyed a hug before heading on towards the car, daisy and Mia walking hand in hand towards the car, Flopsy in Mia’s hand and a cute little Daisy teddy bear in Daisy’s, it was an ironic toy but very cute. Cesca helped them both into the car before getting in herself. She started the ignition, before letting out a huge sigh, she had no idea as to where to go from there, how did she even know that Daisy’s mum would turn up for her, she knew she had to keep the whole situation calm for Mia and Daisy’s sake, everything that were to happen had to seem like it had nothing to do with what had happened by nursery. Cesca really didn’t need the extra stress of worrying about another little person, they reached the house, Daisy apprehensively got out, but with a little reassurance from Cesca she headed to the front door with Mia. Cesca grabbed her bag, which was beginning to feel heavy with the ever growing amount of coursework that was building up with the term in full flow. Cesca unlocked the door pushing it so the girls could go and play. “You two go and play in Mia’s room I’ll get your tea going”, the girls ran up the stairs relatively calmly. Cesca took her shoes off, her feet were so sore. She turned around to head for the sitting room, to find Jonah slightly puzzled in the door way, it startled her.

“Your back late?”, “I know, I was late picking her up and then  things just got complicated”, Cesca pushed past him, she needed some air, she just felt so clogged up, “Ces what do you mean?...Ces”. Cesca had walked into the kitchen, she didn’t know what to do, she didn’t want to panic but she couldn’t help it, Jonah put his firm hands on Cesca’s. “Ces, what’s happened, what’s wrong”, Cesca took a deep breath before looking into Jonah’s deep brown eyes. “I was late picking Mia up, she was in  a right state when I got there, I spoke to the lady that works there and she said that Daisy’s mum hadn’t arrived and I was really late so god knows where her mum was”, Jonah held her close as she finished what she was saying, she once again needed him. “So I waited for Daisy’s mum to arrive, but Daisy was shaky, as if she was scared and then her mum arrived and made a massive thing out of it all and then just left her with me, I have no clue where she is or what she is planning to do”, “Oh god Cesca”, “Well I couldn’t run after her, Mia was hanging of my legs, the girls were both crying and I look like a whale not exactly in the right state to be asking for a slap”. Jonah reassured her as he kissed her forehead, “Ces, we are going to deal with this, we can help Daisy”, “J, I love you so much”, “You look shattered, I’ll start the tea for the girls”, “Thanks baby, I promised them beans on toast with cheese”, “Ooo that does sound good, how about I cheer them up with some chocolate ice cream and squirty cream for dessert”, “Sounds great baby, thank you”. Cesca settled into the sofa, watching as he got everything ready. However stressed out Cesca was he was always able to calm her down, he had so much respect and love for her, he would do anything to make her happy... and I mean anything!
