Chapter 61 - I WANT JONAH!

The sirens were turned on as Cesca and Adanna left in the ambulance, Cesca was hysterical, everything in her life really did always turn into some mad drama. “I need Jonah”, Cesca said through gritted teeth, between gasps of gas and air, “Ces, will get him here, I promise”, Adanna was a bit wary of using the word promise; it was a strong word with a lot of meaning. How could she promise something she wasn’t even sure could come true, but that wasn’t the point, she needed to calm Cesca down, she was a wreck which wasn’t good for or the twins, Cesca was in no state to give birth, which might have been what Cesca wanted but it wasn’t good for her babies, her precious little Betsy and Oscar. This was all supposed to be so exciting, but everything was turning into a nightmare, the Kirby’s were having a lot of those recently. Cesca’s hands clenched her phone, her fingers tapping Jonah’s number repetitively, each time no answer. Cesca was in more and more pain, she was becoming more and more agitated. “Ces, breathe. It will be okay, you need to think about the twins here”, “This isn’t right, I’m not doing this without him”, Adanna could feel her heartbreak, could feel the tears that flowed down Cesca’s cheeks pierce her heart. Adanna couldn’t imagine being in Cesca’s position but she knew it would be heart breaking. Adanna could never believe that the pair of them once uses to be student and teacher and now they were the happiest and closest family she had ever met. Adanna couldn’t believe she was nearly part of breaking them up, destroying the most magical bond that they shared... love. Cesca’s heart was clearly bleeding, her body was shaking and tears were falling, she needed him. Really needed him!  It was scary enough to be bringing twins into the world but to be doing that without Jonah would be even harder, it would be like watching the walls that kept everything together suddenly come crashing down leaving everything vulnerable and prone to breaking. Cesca was already distraught, Adanna didn’t know how well Cesca could cope like this for much longer. Tom arrived soon after, they sat in the room with her, “Tom, find Jonah. Cesca needs him”, “On it”, her best friends frantically attempted to find Jonah, he needed to be here, he couldn’t miss the birth of his babies, how was that fair on any of them. Adanna sat and comforted Cesca that really was a friendship that was stronger than anything that got thrown at it. “Thanks Adanna”, “Ces, were always going to be here for you”, Cesca smiled just as another contraction hit, this one was longer and much more painful, “Let me get someone” Adanna got up and flew towards the door, poking her head left and right down the corridor before poking back to look at Cesca, “I’m fine”, Cesca called through, Adanna came back. “You worry way too much”, Cesca said. But as she said these words she thought back to Jonah, he was always a worrier, but he was her worrier and she needed him. Tom came through the door, Cesca was sweaty and her cheeks tear stained, her palms were moist and fingers shaky, “Any luck?”, Adanna asked almost knowing the answer from the look on Tom’s face, “No”, Tom said with sorry on his lips. Cesca sighed, rolling her eyes to hold back the tears. Tom and Adanna shared a look of worry between one another, what did they do now, what could they do more to the point?

The tears fell some more, as the splattered from her bowed chin on to her enormous stomach, the midwife entered, “It shouldn’t be too long now, your waters have broken so there isn’t the waiting game there usually is”, “No, this can’t be happening, I need my husband, I need Jonah here”, “I’m not sure it’s going to work like that”. The midwife was highly pessimistic, all Cesca needed. She was now coming to terms with the idea she was going to be doing this alone, she may have had her friends but it wasn’t the same as having the one she loved, the one person that meant the most to her. Adanna held Cesca’s hand and put on a brave face for Cesca. This was one of the toughest experiences she had ever faced so god knows what it must have felt like for Cesca. Jonah sat bored rigid in the course, it was full of wannabe teachers, the over cheesy type and the type that just didn’t understand what motivated the students. He tapped his pen on his head, there was no use in making notes, the course was pointless, he knew everything they were on about, this was meant to update people’s skills, and it seemed more like a circus with people showing off skills that weren’t really relevant. It had been a pain just having to drive out of town to be here and now he was sitting doing nothing and had been for at least 3 hours, he would much rather at been at school or better still huddled up with Cesca sharing a long embrace or warm passionate kiss. The idea of being with Cesca put a smile on his face; it was defiantly much nicer than being stuck in this room. They stopped for a break which allowed Jonah to call Cesca, he wanted her so much right now, and he needed his Cesca to put a smile or even a giggle into his face. Anything that would stop him from being so bored. He had managed to find a corner so he could just be alone for a second, he couldn’t take anymore showing off he wasn’t that sort of guy. He took his phone which had been on silent out of his pocket. He was greeted by 7 missed calls and 1 voice mail, had Jonah not learnt since the day that Mia went missing that having your phone on silent wasn’t the best idea, especially when your wife was due any day? Typical bloke. He looked at the missed calls, the first few were from Cesca and were all really close together, rung one after the other, the most recent were from Tom and Adanna, but mainly Tom. Jonah wasn’t quite sure what all the calls were about why they would all be calling him, he just presumed stupidly that they all wanted different things so he called his voicemail to see what the message said. He casually rang the voicemail, it wasn’t anything different or unusual, he’s missed a call, and there wasn’t any big deal about it. How wrong could Jonah be?

The voicemail finally reached the message: Jonah, it’s Tom, you need to get to the hospital Cesca’s gone into labour. Jonah’s face dropped, he listened to the rest of the message before doing anything: This must be the 50th time we have called, the nurses don’t think you’re going to make it in time, Jonah don’t let her down, message received at 12.56. Jonah looked down at his watch 2.05, that was over 2 hours ago, Jonah had Tom’s words of don’t let her down pulsating in his head, he can’t have missed the birth of his twins, this was meant to be one of the best moments in his life, one that he got to share with Cesca but Jonah was pretty sure that, that wasn’t going to happen, he knew deep down Cesca would be facing this all on her own, without him. He hated himself for that. He slammed his phone down before quickly dialling Tom, “Jonah, where the hell are you”, Tom answered the call as he left the room that Cesca was in, Jonah could here Cesca’s screams as she went for every push, Adanna felt heartbroken for the pair of them. Why did life have to be so hard on them, this was a magical moment and Jonah was missing it. “Is she okay, has she had the babies?”, “She’s fine, she is currently in labour with the first baby”, “I can’t miss this, but there is no way I am going to get there in time, I’m 20 minutes away, 10 if I break the speed limit”, “Jonah just get here, you can’t miss this, Cesca needs you”, They both hung up, Tom made his way back into Cesca, she was sweaty and warn out, “Where is he?”, Cesca asked breathless “He’s still at the course he is leaving now, he said he will be 20 minutes but he’s going to try and make it 10”, “He can’t miss this”, Cesca was getting all upset again, “You really need to push now, we can almost see the head”, Cesca’s eyes were streaming with tears. “I can’t do this”, Cesca screamed, “You don’t have much choice”, the midwife said, Adanna shot her a look of disgust, “For god sake women, she is about to give birth to twins and the father is going to miss it, how would you feel”, the midwife focused down towards the floor slightly embarrassed. Tom came over and reassured Adanna with a comforting hug, “It’s going to be okay”, Tom said, “But is it Tom?” Adanna was really worried. He kissed her head before the pair of them was there for Cesca. “One last push, we can see the head”, Adana’s heart sank, Jonah really was going to miss the birth of his first baby, how was this fair on anyone. Cesca let out one last grunt as she gave birth to the first twin. Her cheeks were still tear stained as the a few extra tears managed to squeeze out the minute the baby started screaming, “Congratulations on your little baby girl”, “Betsy”, Cesca said with a smile on her face but it soon turned to sadness when she wanted to turn to Jonah but he wasn’t there. “Congratulations Ces, she’s gorgeous”, Cesca smiled, her friends had been there through it all and that was what was keeping her the slightest bit strong. “Is she okay”, “She perfectly healthy”, the midwife called back, “We need to get the second baby out”, Cesca was exhausted it was a marathon to give birth to Betsy let alone the second baby. “Get ready to push”, Cesca used all the strength she had on every single push. Tom and Adanna remained supportive. Meanwhile Jonah slammed his car door and ran towards the hospital up the steep winding steps that lead to the maternity ward. Cesca was switching between the gas and air and screaming. She felt alone and broken, she needed Jonah, she loved him. This was defiantly going to be a moment to remember but not necessarily for all the right reasons. Cesca gave her last push just as the door swung open, Jonah stood gobsmacked, his breath completely taken from him as his baby was born, “Congratulations, it’s a boy”, This meant so much to Jonah, he got to at least see his little Oscar being brought into the world. He made his way over to Cesca and attempted to comfort her, but Cesca was so angry, so upset.

She turned her head away from Jonah as he came over, Adanna and Tom left the room, they needed some time alone together. This was one of the hardest things the couple had faced. “This was meant to be the most amazing thing ever J, but you weren’t even here. You missed it”, Cesca tried to hold back the tears but it was no use they gushed down her face. “Ces, I’m sorry. I had no clue I was in the course, if it hadn’t have been for the break I would have never seen the messages. I love you Cesca and I’m so proud of you, I never wanted to miss this and I hate myself for the fact that you had to do this alone”, Cesca turned and looked up at him, how could she stay mad at him when this wasn’t his fault, things like this happen all the time it was just typical that it had to happen to them. Cesca caressed Jonah’s face as he sat next to her as a single tear fell from his eye. “Shush, its okay cause we have our twins”, Cesca smiled. He may have missed Betsy being born but the truth was he would always have them. Jonah gave Cesca a passionate kiss, their tongues greeting one another before they pulled away to be greeted with the idea of holding their tiny twins. “Would you like to hold her?”, the midwife asked the pair of them, Cesca looked at Jonah with tears in her eyes and a huge smile on her face, it was a very emotional moment, “Go on, I think she wants to meet you”, Cesca said so calmly. The midwife handed Betsy into Jonah’s arms, he held her so carefully, his face was coated in tears at the sight of his 2nd precious little girl, “She’s beautiful”, Jonah said, this moment was one he wanted to treasure, seeing Betsy so content in his arms, allowed him to forgive himself for missing her entry into the world, he now knew it was all going to be okay. Cesca sat up and admired their little girl to, before being handed their little boy, Oscar. They were an emotional bunch, Cesca was even slightly shaking it was all so surreal. This was it, what they had both been waiting for, for 9 whole months it was finally here. They were both so content, they were possibly the most loved babies in the entire hospital, Cesca and Jonah sat next to each other, both cradling a twin each. “Mia’s going to love them” Cesca said, the idea just made everything even more exciting. It was now the 5 of them and nothing was going to take that away from them. All the risks they had taken together had got them to where they were now and that place was the best place either of them had ever been, life really did feel like gold dust right now. Every moment felt like one to be treasured, they just couldn’t wait to introduced Mia to her little baby brother and sister.
