Chapter 46 - Making the most of a sad occasion

Jonah held Cesca, just holding her was enough to calm her down but at the same time break down, she was calmer but now in floods of tears, they streamed her face like rain drops on a window pain, each following the next like a herd of sheep. Jonah continued to hold her close, her body jolting with every sob. Two little girls appeared calmly and quietly in the doorway, “Is mummy okay?”, Mia asked innocently, Jonah looked up over Cesca’s shoulder, Cesca wiped her eyes before escaping from Jonah’s grip, leaning on the work tops away from Mia, “I’m fine baby’”, that was the lie of the century, she wasn’t anywhere near fine, this had really torn her up and on top of it all she was seriously hormonal which only added to her emotional state and tears. “Mia, why don’t you both go and wash your hands, dinner will be ready shortly”, Mia did as she was told, headed up stairs to go and wash her hands with Daisy. “J, what are we going to do. I can’t cope with all of this... I just can’t”. Jonah held Cesca in his arms, “Ces, we need to be strong for Daisy, just till we work out what’s going to happen”, Cesca looked up at Jonah giving him a perfect kiss, “I love you!” Cesca cleared away the panda eyes as Jonah dished up the girls tea, “Mia, Daisy, dinner is ready”, Cesca called up in the best composed voice she could muster up. She took a deep breath in before walking through with a smile on her face, just seeing Jonah now that she wasn’t crying seemed to be doing the trick. The girls had their tea early as it was the only way to work out what was going on, distract Daisy from worrying. Jonah and Cesca brang a plate through, each, popping it down in front of one of the girls before they lapped it all up. Cesca sat next to Mia opposite Jonah, “Daisy did you like that”, Daisy nodded with the most sincere smile she had given out all day. “Mummy I’ve finished”, “Well done Mia and Daisy, Daisy finished first so she gets pudding first”, Cesca smiled at Mia but she didn’t quite understand the fact that Daisy needed a treat so instead got upset at the idea that her mummy had suggested, “But I finished to”, “Yes, but Daisy finished first, so she is going to get hers first. Mia you’re still going to get some”. Mia put on a strop whilst Jonah went and filled up the bowls, chocolate ice-cream and squirty cream, yummy. Jonah bought through the bowls giving one to Daisy and then keeping one with him as he sat down, he enjoyed teasing Mia funnily enough she didn’t see the funny side of it all. Jonah began to eat it, Cesca couldn’t help but laugh as Mia got more and more agitated, “J”, she said in a giggly state, Daisy was starting to find it funny to, “What’s the magic word Mia?”, “Please”. “Nope”, Jonah teased her, Mia got even more grizzly, “Jonah”, “Fairy wings”, Mia asked again. “Nope”, Mia was starting to enjoy this guessing game,”Smarties”, “Your too clever”, Jonah passed her the bowl and a spoon but not before Jonah had one more spoonful, “Naughty daddy”, “It’s okay Mia, daddy was just testing that it wasn’t dangerous”. Cesca laughed, he was such a tease. Daisy finished first, politely saying thank you, Mia followed, “Right you two go and wash your hands then I think you could have a few minutes in the paddling pool since it’s nice outside, it’s still full from the other day”, Cesca smiled, holding out her hand which Jonah cradled in his. She mouthed the words thank you; he always was one for making light of a situation. Jonah cleared away the plates along with Jonah, the girls returned, both were wearing skirts or dresses so were able to just paddle their feet in the water, they giggled and laughed and just had a whale of a time, “Mia should sleep well tonight”, Jonah said. “She should”, Cesca caught sight of the clock out of the corner of her eye.. It read 6.00pm, it was getting late for two 3 year olds, Cesca was confused, “J, is that really the time?” Jonah looked over, gosh this summer weather is confusing, it’s so sunny. Cesca didn’t know what to do she bit her lip as she leant on the work tops watching them, “J, where’s her mum. What do we do now?”

Jonah left the room returning with some towels, “Ces, there’s not much we can do”. He headed into the garden. Drying off the girls feet, Cesca had moved on to biting her nails, Jonah hadn’t exactly answered her question. He let the girls go upstairs and play whilst he went back to talk to Cesca. “Well, it doesn’t look like she is going to just turn up so how’s about she stays tonight?”, “That sounds like a good idea, but what will we tell her. We can’t just say your mum isn’t going to turn up so you’re dumped with us”. “Ces, stop panicking, it’s not good for the babies, we’ll tell them that Daisy can stay for a sleepover and then in the morning we phone social services”, “The social!” “Ces, we can’t have her stay here, there is obviously a lot to Daisy’s situation, they need to help her, were expecting twins, we can’t have another 3 year old to look after”, “Your right, but then you always are”, Cesca got her words out through gritted teeth. They shared a long embrace and a passionate kiss before the both headed on upstairs to tell them the news. Before either of them had a chance to speak Daisy said something that shocked them to the core. “My mummy isn’t coming is she?” this completely threw them off course, what where they supposed to say now, Cesca stepped up to the mark, knowing that Daisy looked up to her, trusted her. “No poppet, but for tonight you can stay here with Mia”, Cesca felt it was right to be honest, Daisy seemed to know what was going on, a smile grew across her face as she finished her sentence. “Right let’s find you some pj’s, Mia can you get ready for bed please”. Mia reached underneath her pillow for her Jim jams and headed off to put them on, “Here you go Daisy”, Cesca handed over a pair of Mia’s pyjamas, and Daisy smiled as she took them and gave Cesca a big hug. “Aww Daisy, we will always look out for you, now how about you girls get into bed, you have a long day tomorrow with nursery”, Cesca found it hard to talk about tomorrow knowing what was going to happen, knowing that they were going to be the ones putting little Daisy into care, but they were going to be making her life better, giving her a chance.

Cesca leant over to give the girls a goodnight kiss, noticing that Daisy had some severe bruising on her arm. “Daisy is that sore”, she didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, but this was seriously worrying. “J, can you urr come here a second”, Jonah saw instantly what Cesca was talking about, he gasped, choking on his own breath at the sight of this poor little girls arm. Cesca and Jonah quickly said goodnight to the girls, with Daisy completely ignoring Cesca’s question. They gave them a kiss before slowly closing the door; Cesca was jittery all over the place in fact. “Ces you need to breathe”, “Your right, we do need to call social, but not tomorrow, I can’t sleep knowing what that poor girl has gone through”, “Okay, whatever you want baby, but you need to give yourself the chance to calm down, you aren’t going to help anyone in the state you’re in,  give yourself a few moments, while I grab you some coffee”, Jonah smiled, leaving Cesca curled up on their bed, her hands placed on her stomach cradling their twins. She leant over to the bedside table, after catching sight of the house phone. She contemplated dialling for the social there and then, but soon realised her head was all over the place, her hands were jittery, her feet ached from all the standing up and her eyes were sore from all the tears she had been crying. She felt every emotion little Daisy should be feeling but was completely oblivious to as it was all she had ever known. This was the thing that really hurt Cesca the fact a three year old girl could know no different to being hit, abused, and ignored. How could this ever be considered right or justified.

Cesca could hear Jonah’s footsteps as he came up the stairs carrying her piping hot coffee, black 1 sugar just the way she liked it. Cesca’s mind was over flowing, everything jolted about, her brow began to break into sweats as it all started to become too much, Cesca had once again found herself buried deep in someone else’s problems and this time it was so much worse, it was affecting her in  a way she never thought it would, the fact it was affecting a child, a 3 year old girl was really getting to Cesca, the fact the her daughter was exactly the same age and would never dream of putting her or anyone else for that matter through anything like it. Suddenly Cesca felt a pain so strong, it took over her body, the sweats were no longer nerves or worry they were pure pain, her back tingled and her toes flinched, her face screwed up as her fists clenched on the duvet covers, Jonah reached the door way just as she let out a scream. The mug of hot coffee went crashing to the floor, Jonah leapt over to Cesca, rushing to her side, trying to make her comfortable, trying to help her, but this time he wasn’t the one that could help her she needed someone with professional expertise. Jonah picked up the phone that had been in Cesca’s hand and dialled 999, instead of the social services. This day couldn’t have got any worse, but it seemed like it just might be how could it even possible. Cesca’s eyes filled with sorrow, her hand now clenching Jonah’s “Please don’t leave me”, Cesca panted, trying to breathe through the pain, but nothing seemed to help, all they could do was sit and wait for the ambulance to arrive, Jonah didn’t think he would be able to live with himself if anything were to happen to Cesca, his beloved Cesca and their twins.
